US Govt is all set to RFID enabled passports starting in Denver and then all states by 2017. The weblog also points out that despite the concerns of the many that it could be hacked Uncle sam is pushing these technologies. It has many adavantages such as it could be tracked and it is difficult to forge the passport and could store the biometric information such as fingerprints in the future. These have contactless chips that could be sensed from four inches apart. Despite the downside, I would say it is step in the right direction.
Recently I received a note from Southwest gas stating that they are going to install a system wherein they can read the usage remotely. I am sure they must be using some sort of RFID technology. It was completely in the back of my mind but when I saw the post by Tom Peters it came out. I had the same feeling because coming from India, where the water meters are read and they give you a bill after filling out the same on the spot, this change is really a ground breaker. Question remains as to whether the power companies also follow the suit?
